Kyle Schwarber hit four balls that traveled a total of just under 1/3 of a mile as he set a personal career-high and matched an MLB record for home runs in a game. The feat has only been accomplished 20 times prior to Schwarber – two of those times were this season – making a four home run game rarer than a perfect game, of which there have been 24. He also drove in nine runs in the game, another personal and franchise record. In all, the Phillies hit seven home runs, just one shy of a franchise record as they beat Atlanta 19-4 at Citizens Bank Park Thursday night.

The offensive outburst allowed the Phillies to take out some frustrations after a long, disappointing sweep by the Mets that put the Phillies losing streak at Citi Field at 10 straight games and 23 out of the last 29 games they have played there.

Schwarber’s four home runs give him 49 on the season, just nine shy of Ryan Howard‘s franchise record for home runs in a season set in 2006. He also hit a fly ball in the second inning that went 324-feet to center field and was caught by Michael Harris II. In addition to Schwarber, the Phillies got home runs from Bryce Harper (22), Max Kepler (14), and J.T. Realmuto (11). Ironically, one guy who could have used a home run was center fielder Harrison Bader, who was a home run short of hitting for the cycle and finished with four hits – two singles, a double, and a triple – in the game.

Every Phillies player who got to the plate in the game had at least one hit with the exception of Weston Wilson, who came in defensively for Harper in the seventh inning and went 0-for-2. Edmundo Sosa, who came in at short for Trea Turner, went 1-for-1 with a run scored and Rafael Marchan came in for Realmuto and also went 1-for-1. In addition to the four-hit games from Schwarber and Bader, Turner, Harper, and Brandon Marsh each collected two hits.

On the mound, Aaron Nola had a tough first inning when he threw 37 pitches and allowed three earned runs, but the Phillies came back with five runs in the bottom of the inning against starter Cal Quantrill (4-12, 6.04). Nola later gave up a solo home run to Matt Olson in the sixth inning, Olson’s 21st of the season. Daniel Robert threw two shutout innings and Lou Trivino threw a clean ninth inning.

The Mets sweeping the Phillies in New York moved the Metropolitans to just four games behind the Phillies in the NL East, but the Phillies win combined with a Mets 7-4 loss to Miami pushes the New Yorkers back to five games behind. Miami is 14 games behind and Atlanta is 16. Washington trails the Phillies by 23.5 games.
