While all eyes were on Aaron Nola pitching for Lehigh Valley, further west there was another Nola that took to the mound. Older brother Austin Nola is a member of the lowly Colorado Rockies who were hosting the Toronto Blue Jays Wednesday night. A catcher by trade, the elder of the Nola boys found himself attempting to channel his younger brother when he was called on to pitch.
Toronto was running away with things and held a 12-1 lead going to the ninth inning. Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer didn’t want to waste another pitcher so he came up with the next best thing; a catcher. Austin, 35, was making his pitching debut in his seventh major league season, and it’s not likely that he will look to make another appearance any time soon.
It took Nola 29 pitches – 18 strikes – to get through the inning. When it was all over, Nola had given up eight hits, two of which were home runs and been charged with eight earned runs as the Blue Jays stretched their lead to 20-1.
Meanwhile, back in the Lehigh Valley, the younger Nola had a successful rehab outing for Lehigh Valley throwing 3.2 innings, allowing four hits, two walks, and three strikeouts that resulted in one earned run.
