The Phillies made a number of roster moves Thursday, causing some dominoes to fall throughout the minor league system. One of the moves includes Aaron Nola being moved to the 60-day IL, so that he does not count toward the 40-man roster limit. Nola will be out longer than initially expected after suffering a second injury while on the IL.

Taking Nola off of the 40-man opened a spot for Buddy Kennedy to have his contract selected from Lehigh Valley. The Phillies added Kennedy and optioned outfielder Weston Wilson down to Lehigh Valley. Wilson started the season on the IL and since being activated late in April has just 42 plate appearances with the Phillies and is slashing .194/.310/.278 with the team.

Kennedy came into the season out of options and was placed on waivers by the Phillies, but was not claimed by another team. Rather than become a free agent, Kennedy re-signed with the Phillies on a minor league deal that included an “upward mobility” clause, which Kennedy recently triggered. The clause means that the Phillies must add him to the active roster or again put him through waivers. Rather than risk losing him, the Phillies brought him to Philadelphia in replace of Wilson.

In 61 games with Lehigh Valley this season, Kennedy is batting 8-40-.283/.388/.447. He has also played well defensively with a .978 fielding percentage in 15 games at third base. Two nights ago against Rochester, Kennedy made two defensive plays to rob Red Wings’ hitters of extra base hits in the late innings. The 26-year-old has also played 33 games at first base and three games at second base this season with Lehigh Valley. Kennedy also has strong walk and strikeout percentages this season with an 11.6-percent walk rate and 15.3-percent strikeout rate.

At Triple-A Lehigh Valley, pitcher Nick Hoffman, who was recently acquired from the Texas Rangers was activated and infielder Nick Dunn, who was also recently acquired, was promoted from Double-A Reading. The IronPigs placed pitcher Gabe Mosser on the developmental list.

At Double-A Reading, infielder Luis Verdugo was activated from the Developmental List and pitcher Griff McGarry was activated from the 7-day IL. Pitcher Braeden Fausnaught was placed on the 7-day IL retroactive to June 18.

For Clearwater, outfielder Griffin Burkholder started a rehab assignment with the Florida Complex League (FCL) Phillies and right-hander Giussepe Velasquez was assigned to the FCL from Clearwater.

Nola was originally placed on the IL with a sprained ankle but later suffered a stress fracture in his right rib cage, which will delay his return to the active roster until at least mid-August now.
