The Phillies ended Weston Wilson‘s rehab assignment and activated him from the IL in time for the final game of the series against the New York Mets. Wilson was injured during spring training when he suffered a left oblique strain that pushed back the start of his season. Kody Clemens claimed Wilson’s spot on the Phillies 26-man roster to start the season and is out of options, leading to him being designated for assignment.

Wilson’s rehab stint included four games with Clearwater and another six games with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, hitting .158 (6-38) in his 10 games.

Wilson was already on the 40-man roster, so the Phillies did not need to clear a roster spot for him, but because Clemens is out of options, they could not simply option him to Lehigh Valley and needed to designate him for assignment, which automatically removes him from the 40-man roster. The Phillies now have five days to either trade Clemens or place him on irrevocable waivers. If the Phillies wait the maximum five days to place him on waivers, Clemens status could be in limbo for the next week since teams have 48 hours to claim a player on waivers.

Clemens came to the Phillies in a trade with the Detroit Tigers that brought Gregory Soto to the Phillies. Soto was dealt to the Orioles last July for pitchers Moises Chace (AA-Reading) and Seth Johnson (AAA-Lehigh Valley). The Phillies sent infielder/outfielder Matt Vierling, infielder Nick Maton, and catcher Donny Sands to the Tigers in that deal. Vierling is the only one of the three still with the Tigers, but like Wilson, has yet to play because of an injury. Maton is now with the White Sox and Donny Sands is playing in the independent Mexican League.

In seven games with the Phillies this season, Clemens was 0-6 with a walk. Spending parts of the previous two seasons with the Phillies, Clemens had accumulated a .225 average with 57 hits in 253 at-bats.
