Monday was Opening Night in the Venezuelan Winter League. The Phillies have a number of prospects playing in Venezuela this winter, including: Pitchers – Saul Teran (RHP) and Guissepe Velasquez (RHP), Catcher – Rafael Marchan, Infielder – Juan Villavicencio (SS), and Outfielders – Wuilfredo Antunez and Francisco Renteria.
On Opening Night, Marchan went 0-for-3 with a walk for the Tiburones de La Guaria in a 10-6 win over Navegantes del Magallanes.
On Tuesday night, Juan Villavicencio went 0-for-2 with two walks while scoring a run and driving in a run. Villavicencio was hitting leadoff with Francisco Renteria batting third for the Aguilas del Zulia in their 8-0 win over Leones del Caracas. Renteria went 0-for-2, but gained an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the game. Velasquez threw two scoreless innings – one hit, one walk, two strikeouts – for Zulia. Velasquez needed 33 pitches, 20 of which were strikes, to get through the two innings.
Wuilfredo Antunez went 0-for-1 as a pinch-hitter and stayed in the game to play right field for Caracas.
The Mexican Pacific League opened with just one game Tuesday night. The game did not feature any Phillies prospects. The Dominican Winter League opens on Friday.
