The Phillies placed struggling reliever Brad Keller on the Injured List after he was diagnosed with right elbow tendonitis. The Phillies made the announcement just prior to Tuesday night’s game against the Miami Marlins at Citizens Bank Park. To fill Keller’s roster spot the Phillies recalled right-hander Max Lazar from Lehigh Valley.
Keller allowed three runs on three hits and two walks Saturday in Milwaukee. The Phillies won the game 9-8, but Keller’s outing made things especially tough late in the game. Keller has made 31 relief appearances for the Phillies and is 2-1 with a 4.15 ERA in his first season in Philadelphia. The 4.15 ERA is just above his career mark of 4.14, but last season with the Cubs, Keller was 4-2, 2.07 in 68 outings. The move to put Keller on the IL was retroactive to Sunday.
Lazar opened the season on the IL with an oblique injury and worked his way through a minor league rehab assignment. He and reliever Zach Pop were both eligible to come off of the IL on the same day and the Phillies elected to activate Lazar and designated Pop for assignment. Lazar has given up four earned runs over five innings of work with Lehigh Valley since being activated and assigned to Lehigh Valley. With Philadelphia, Lazar has pitched 55 career innings and has a 4.75 ERA.
The Phillies did not announce any exact timeline for Keller to return to the Phillies bullpen.
