Three players shared two awards for the Phillies Minor League Player and Pitcher of the Month for the month of May. A pair of right-handers – Ramon Marquez (Clearwater) and Alex McFarlane (Reading) – shared the Minor League Pitcher of the Month honors. The Threshers added another honor when outfielder Griffin Burkholder was named the Minor League Hitter of the Month.

Marquez, 20, made three starts and also had a five inning relief appearance during the month. In the four games he pitched 18.2 innings and gave up just three earned runs for an ERA of 1.45 with a WHIP of 0.91 and opponents batting average against of .164 for the month of May. The right-hander set a career-high in strikeouts when he fanned nine Daytona Tortugas in his first start of the season and in his second start, struck out nine more hitters in five scoreless innings against Lakeland. He struck out a total of 32 hitters and walked just six.

In addition to being named the Phillies co-Minor League Pitcher of the Month, Marquez was also the Pitcher of the Week in the Florida State League (FSL) for May 11-17.

The Phillies signed Marquez as an amateur free agent in January, 2025.

McFarlane was actually recalled by the Phillies on April 24th, but did not get into a game with the big league club. He made 10 relief appearances with Reading last month and did not allow an earned run in 10.1 innings of work. He also converted all three of his save opportunities. The 24-year-old struck out 15, walked five and allowed an opponent’s batting average of just .189 for the month. Among Eastern League pitchers to appear in 10 or more games in the month of May, McFarlane finished tied for the top spot in ERA (0.00), was fourth in strikeouts per nine innings (12.2) and strikeout rate (33-percent).

McFarlane, who is a native of St. Thomas in the JU.S. Virgin Islands, has a current streak of 14 games without allowing an earned run. The streak dates back to April 22 and is the longest streak in the league this season.

The Phillies drafted McFarlane, who attended the University of Miami, in the fourth round of the 2022 MLB Draft. He turns 25 on June 9.

Like Marquez, Burkholder is 20-years-old and slashed .352/.440/.606/1.046 for the month with three home runs and 14 RBI. The outfielder also smacked nine doubles and scored 15 runs. The Leesburg, Virginia native stole five bases in 18 games with the Threshers. While he was hot all month, Burkholder was especially impressive May 5-9 when he had seven hits, including two doubles and two home runs. On the FSL leader boards for the month of May, Burkholder was second in doubles, third in batting average, slugging percentage, and OPS. He ranked fourth in extra-base hits, fifth in on-base percentage and tied for sixth in total bases for the month.

The Phillies drafted Burkholder out of Freedom High School in Riding, Virginia with the 24th pick in the second round of the 2024 Draft.
