The Phillies promoted starter Griff McGarry from the Jersey Shore BlueClaws to the Reading Fightin’ Phils after a string of impressive outings for the right-hander. McGarry made five starts in June and went 3-1 with a 2.86 ERA. However, in his last four starts the numbers are even better. In those games, he threw 23 1/3 innings and had an ERA of 1.93, which included a game where he gave up three earned runs in six innings against Aberdeen. He struck out 48 batters during June and 34 of them came in his last three outings.

The 23-year old was taken by the Phillies with the 13th pick of the fifth round in last year’s draft. In four relief appearances and one start last season with Clearwater and three more starts with Jersey Shore, McGarry was 1-0 with a 2.96 ERA. In 71 minor league innings, McGarry has whiffed 125 batters. He started slowly this season but has evened his record at 3-3 and has his season ERA at 3.86 with the ‘Claws.

Reading has McGarry slated to make his first Double-A start Wednesday against the Flying Squirrels in Richmond.
