AJ Graffanino, the son of former major leaguer Tony Graffanino, was signed by the Phillies as a free agent and assigned to Double-A Reading. The 24-year old had been released by Baltimore. Graffanino has reached as high as Triple-A, but has played just six games at the highest minor league level.

In 22 games with Double-A Bowie this season, Graffanino batted .226 with two home runs and six RBI. In his four games with Triple-A Norfolk, Graffanino hit just .154 (2-for-13) after going 1-for-7 in two games with the Tides in 2021.

The Orioles had acquired Graffanino from Atlanta during the 2020 season in the deal that sent pitcher Tommy Milone to the Braves. Initially, Atlanta drafted the University of Washington product in the eighth round of the 2018 Draft. Graffanino has played primarily as a middle infielder – 64 games at second, 47 at short – but has also played at third (11 games) and has filled in at all three outfield positions in 12 minor league games.
