A Nice Start; That’s All it Was
Justin Crawford had two hits, including a double to left-center field in the Phillies 3-0 loss to the Blue Jays in Dunedin Saturday. He also made a nice sliding catch in left center field. Keep in mind that this is Spring Training and it’s the first game of Spring Training at that, so don’t go overboard on any assessments. In his other at-bat, Crawford was called for a pitch clock violation on a 1-2 pitch, resulting in a strikeout.
Paul McIntosh is a name worth keeping in the back of your head. The Phillies added him from the Marlins in the same trade that brought over Jesus Luzardo. The 28-year-old played at three levels last season with a combined stat line of 10-44-.259/.343/.441/.784 and did a solid job defensively, although he only threw out 10% of basestealers. McIntosh only got one at-bat against the Blue Jays on Saturday, but singled in that lone opportunity. McIntosh profiles as a backup catcher at the major league level. Mound Notes
Of the seven pitchers who worked for the Phillies on Saturday, Max Lazar was the only one to throw a perfect inning. Lazar picked up one strikeout and needed just 11 pitches – 7 strikes – to put the side down in order. Bryce Wilson started and threw two shutout innings, but did give up three hits and a walk. Rule 5 pick Zach McCambley pitched one inning and allowed a walk, lefty Andrew Walling gave up one hit in one inning, and Andrew Baker walked two hitters in his one inning.
Seth Johnson took the loss when he gave up a solo home run to Daulton Varsho in the fifth inning and one inning later, Nolan Hoffman gave up a two-run home run to Sean Keys.
Sunday Viewing
The Phillies open the home portion of their spring schedule Sunday afternoon against the Pirates. The game will be on NBC Sports Philadelphia with Tom McCarthy and Ruben Amaro Jr. doing the broadcast. The radio side will have the usual pairing of Scott Franzke and Larry Andersen on 94.1 WIP.
Two changes to the Phillies broadcasts were made official on Saturday. It was confirmed that sideline reporter Taryn Hatcher is no longer with NBC Sports Philadelphia. Her position was eliminated late in 2025, so the broadcasts will not have any sideline reporters this season. Also, Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt will not return for his Sundays With Schmidt broadcasts where he sat in on every Sunday afternoon home game. The rest of the broadcast crew is also returning, as is Kevin Stocker on the radio side.
