The Phillies acquired right-hander Daniel Robert from Texas late last April and proceeded to option and recall him six times to and from Lehigh Valley, and that was just between May and the end of August. After that, Robert was placed on the 15-day IL and later transferred to the 60-day IL with a right forearm strain. Robert became a free agent at the end of last season after being non-tendered by the Phillies. On Tuesday, Robert re-signed with the Phillies on a minor league deal.

In his time with the Phillies, Robert made 15 relief appearances and finished with a 4.15 ERA. In his time with Lehigh Valley, Robert made 18 relief appearances and posted a 3.38 ERA. He also pitched in 10 games for the Round Rock Express (Texas) and had a 1.54 ERA.

Robert, 31, was a 21st round draft pick by Texas in the 2017 Draft out of Auburn, but didn’t make his MLB debut until midway through the 2024 season when he made four relief outings covering 5.2 innings for the Rangers with a 3.18 ERA.

Robert throws a four-seam fastball, a cutter, and a sweeper. The options give him a decent repertoire of pitches to draw from. In his short major league sample size, Robert has an intriguing 24.7-percent strikeout rate, but also carries a high 14.1 walk rate. The MLB average for strikeouts is 22.4-percent and is 8.3-percent for walks.

The Phillies have given Robert an invitation to spring training and the opportunity to compete for a place in their bullpen. The field of competitors is pretty large and there are few remaining spots that have not yet been claimed. The Phillies have gathered a growing collection of pitchers in an effort to find a combination that works for them.
