We’re still stuck in winter, but there is some news to be found regarding Phillies prospects. We spin around the winter leagues, the transactions, and who knows where else to find some news on Phillies prospects.
The Reigning MVP
One of the early moves made by the Phillies this offseason was to sign outfielder Bryan De La Cruz to a minor league contract. The veteran got just 47 at-bats with Atlanta and hit .191 in the majors. In 102 games at Triple-A, De La Cruz hit 15 home runs and drove in 46 runs in his time with the Yankees and Braves affiliates. He put together a slash line of: .263/.330/.431/.762 in the two stops. His best performance came this winter playing at home in the Dominican Republic with the Toros del Este, where he has played for each of the past six winters. This season, De La Cruz, who always performs well in the league, hit eight home runs and drove in 40 runs in 44 games with a slash line of: .301/.375/.515/.887 and was named the league’s Most Valuable Player. In his six Dominican winter seasons, De La Cruz, 29, has hit: 11-72-.274/.340/.420/.760 in 123 games. He played more games this winter than in any previous season with the Toros.
In early November, De La Cruz signed with the Phillies and received an invitation to Spring Training to compete for a roster spot. If he is not successful, he would serve as depth to cover any injuries or demotions while getting playing time with Lehigh Valley.
