The Phillies have added a former MLB AL MVP and MLB Manager of the Year to their coaching staff. The team announced this morning that Don Mattingly, who has long been rumored to have an offer on the table to take the job, will step in to be Rob Thomson‘s right-hand man.

Mattingly, 64, is coming off of a three-year stint with the Toronto Blue Jays as their bench coach and prior to that he served as the manager of the Dodgers and Marlins for 12 seasons with a career record of 889-950 (.483). In 2020, Mattingly was named the NL Manager of the Year as the Marlins skipper. He also served as a coach under Yankees and Dodgers manager Joe Torre from 2004-2010. As a player, Mattingly was named the AL Most Valuable Player in 1985 during his 14 seasons as a New York Yankees first baseman.

Mattingly replaces Mike Calitri, who took a job as the Phillies Major League Field Coordinator.

There will be some familiar faces for Mattingly in Philadelphia. He and manager Rob Thomson crossed paths during their time with the Yankees and Mattingly’s son, Preston Mattingly, is the Phillies general manager.

The Phillies coaching staff is now locked and loaded for the upcoming season. Thomson and Mattingly will be joined by Caleb Cotham (pitching coach), Kevin Long (hitting coach), Dusty Wathan (third base coach), Paco Figueroa (first base coach), Bobby Dickerson (infield coach), Edwar Gonzalez (assistant hitting coach), Rafael Pena (assistant hitting coach), Mark Lowy (assistant pitching coach), Cesar Ramos (bullpen coach), Brad Flanders (bullpen catcher/assistant catching coach), Hector Rabago (bullpen catcher/assistant catching coach).
