Lenny Dykstra, former member of the Phillies and Mets, had stayed out of trouble for a while, but it appears that string has run out. Pennsylvania State Police made a traffic stop on New Year’s Day, pulling over a truck in which Dykstra was a passenger. The PA State Police allege that a trooper found Dykstra to be in possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia. Dykstra was arrested but not taken into custody according to The Athletic, who spoke with Trooper Kody Nowicki.

The stop occurred near Scranton, Pennsylvania where Dykstra lives. The driver of the vehicle was not identified and no details were given on whether that person was also arrested.

The State Police noted that unspecified charges will be filed. They also did not specify specifically what type of drugs or paraphernalia Dykstra was found to be in possession of. Dykstra was previously arrested on drug and terroristic threat charges in 2019 after an altercation with an Uber driver in New Jersey. Those charges were later dropped. He also served time in federal prison for bankruptcy fraud and sentenced to more than six months for hiding assets during a bankruptcy proceeding. That term ran consecutively with grand theft auto charges and providing a false financial statement, which he pled no contest to.

Dykstra started his career with the Mets, who had drafted him, making his MLB debut in 1985. During the 1989 season, the Phillies acquired Dykstra along with reliever Roger McDowell for Juan Samuel and Dykstra, whose nickname during his playing days was “Nails”, played in Philadelphia through the 1996 season. While with the Phillies he made three all-star teams, won a Silver Slugger Award and finished second in MVP voting in 1993 when he led the majors in plate appearances (773) and runs scored (143), and led the NL in at-bats (637), hits (194), and walks (129) while hitting .305/.420/.482/.902 for the Phillies team that were National League Champions.
