Christian Cairo, the son of former Phillies utility man Miguel Cairo, signed a minor league deal with the Phillies recently. The elder Cairo played in 27 games with the Phillies in 2009, hitting .267/.283/.422/.705 in 2009. Last season, Miguel Cairo served as the interim manager of the Washington Nationals after the firing of Dave Martinez.
The younger Cairo picked up his dad’s versatility and has played every position except pitcher and catcher as a professional. Last season, Cairo spent the season with Triple-A Columbus, an affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians, and hit 2-28-.237/.338/.331/.669 and stole 38 bases in 45 attempts. Last season Cairo did not play at first base for the Clippers, but did play all three other infield positions and all three outfield positions. Most of his time has been spent on the infield at second, third and short. In six minor league seasons, Cairo is a career .225/.354/.318/.672 hitter with 17 home runs, 134 RBI, and 105 stolen bases in 129 attempts for a stolen base percentage of 81-percent.
Cairo played for USA Baseball’s 15U National Team in 2016 and played in the Arizona Fall League in 2023 with the Peoria Javelinas and hit .289/.404/.368/.772 in 12 games (47 plate appearances.)
The Guardians had left Cairo unprotected in last year’s Rule 5 Draft and he was selected by the Atlanta Braves, but returned to Cleveland just prior to the start of the regular season. Cleveland drafted Cairo in the fourth round of the 2019 MLB Draft.
