The Phillies are looking far and wide for pitchers who can add some depth and insurance to their organizational bullpen. The latest is Jonathan Hernandez, who has already been sidelined with Tommy John surgery in 2020 and was sidelined with shoulder soreness for much of last season.
Originally signed by the Texas Rangers as an international free agent and pitched in 124 major league games with the Rangers prior to being claimed off waivers by Seattle in August of 2024 and adding three more relief appearances with them in 2024. Last season he signed as a free agent with Tampa Bay and spent the season at Triple-A Durham.
In his major league career, Hernandez is 13-8, 4.29 with 124 relief appearances and 3 starts for the Rangers and Mariners. At Triple-A last season Hernandez was only available for 11 relief outings and he made one starts for the Bulls, posting a 2.25 ERA. The shoulder soreness had him sidelined from early April until the end of August, but he returned to make 11 relief outings and 1 start after being activated. The 29-year-old right-hander is pitching in the Dominican Winter League and has 15 appearances covering 13.1 innings with a 2.70 ERA even though he has walked nine hitters.
Philadelphia has added a number of pitchers on minor league contracts this offseason. The way things stand now, there will be some opportunities in the Phillies bullpen for the 2026 season.
