On their annual search for relievers to help bolster their bullpen, the Phillies dipped into the free agent market to sign veteran Bryse Wilson who pitched for the Chicago White Sox last season. Wilson has pitched in the majors in all or part of eight seasons.
Jon Heyman of The New York Post was the first to report the signing, which is a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training. It is assumed that with a good number of spots open on the 40-man roster, Wilson’s deal is at the major league level.
Wilson was drafted by the Braves in the fourth round of the 2016 Draft and made his MLB debut two years later with three appearances with Atlanta. Wilson has shifted back-and-forth between being a starter and a reliever and made a postseason start for the Braves in 2020 when he threw six innings of one run ball as a starter against the Dodgers. The Braves dealt him to Pittsburgh at the trade deadline in 2021 in the deal that brought Richard Rodriguez to Atlanta. In January of 2024 the Pirates designated Wilson for assignment and ended up selling his contract to the Brewers and he joined the White Sox after becoming a free agent following the 2024 season.
He has made 57 starts in the majors to go with 106 relief appearances. In his career, Wilson is 9-19 with a 5.44 ERA as a starter and has a 4.01 ERA with an 11-4 record and four saves out of the bullpen. His numbers suggest the Phillies are looking at him as a right-handed reliever or he would be a possible swingman for the team.
Last season with the Sox, the soon to be 28-year-old went 0-2 with a 6.65 ERA in five starts and 15 relief appearances.
