You can never have enough pitching. The Phillies have made some minor league pitching signings this offseason and on Tuesday they added one more. Right-hander MT Morrissey pitched in the MLB Draft League last summer for the Trenton Thunder and signed a minor league contract with the Phillies.
The contract was an early birthday present for Morrissey, who turns 24 on Thursday. He pitched at three different schools, pitching for Georgetown in 2021, Bryant University 2022-2024, and New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in 2025. In five college seasons, Morrissey had a 7-9 record with a 5.98 ERA. Last summer with Trenton, he was 3-0 with a 3.94 ERA in eight starts covering 45.2 innings with 17 walks and 38 strikeouts and a 1.182 WHIP.
Morrissey is a 6′ 1″, 205 pound righty who is primarily a fastball/slider pitcher, but does have a curve and changeup that he uses on a limited basis. His four-seam fastball sits in the low 90s, but he can put it up to between 96-98 mph. He throws a tight slider with a low (82-83 mph) 80s velocity. His curve sits in the upper 70s, but he seems to lack confidence in it and uses it sparingly. The changeup is almost an afterthought for Morrissey and doesn’t really come into play as an out pitch for him.
It will be interesting to see where the Phillies assign him out of spring training. A lot of that will depend on what they see from him in camp and what level they believe he can handle to start the year. With some success in the MLBD on his resume, he would be a candidate to start either at Jersey Shore or potentially at Reading if all goes well for him in spring training.
