Members of the Baseball Writers Association of America announced their voting for the National League MVP on Thursday. The ballots were collected prior to the postseason, so as not to be influenced by playoff performances by any of the players. As expected, Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers wasn’t just named the MVP, but he was a unanimous selection, taking all 30 first place votes.

Phillies designated hitter Kyle Schwarber finished second, collecting 23 second place votes, 5 third place votes, and 1 vote each for fourth and fifth in the balloting. When all of the balloting points were added up, Ohtani had 420 points compared to 260 for Schwarber.

Schwarber had a career-year in 2025, becoming only the second Phillies player to reach the 50 home run mark in a season. Schwarber finished with 56 home runs, just two behind Ryan Howard‘s mark of 58 in 2006. Schwarber’s contract expired at the end of the season and he is now a free agent and able to sign with any team. In four seasons in Philly, Schwarber hit 187 home runs and drove in 434 runs, composing a slash line of: .226/.349/.507/.856. Schwarber also set career highs in OPS (.928), hits (145) and WAR (4.7), in addition to setting a major league record for home runs by a left-handed hitter against a left-handed pitcher by blasting 23 Schwarbombs versus southpaws.

Juan Soto of the Mets finished third in the balloting with four writers placing him ahead of Schwarber for second place in the balloting. Three writers also put Geraldo Perdomo of the Diamondbacks ahead of Schwarber with second place votes. Soto finished with 231 points and Perdomo finished with 196 total points to finish third and fourth. Soto hit 43-105-.263/.396/.525/.921 with the Mets. Perdomo finished his season at 20-100-.290/.389/.462/.851 for Arizona.

Trea Turner – 15-69-.304/.355/.457/.812 – finished fifth in the balloting with 102 points. Cristopher Sanchez, who finished second in Cy Young balloting, also received MVP votes with one sixth place vote, four ninth place votes, and three tenth place votes for a total of 16 votes in the balloting.

Aaron Judge of the Yankees won the American League MVP award with 17 of 30 first place votes. Seattle catcher Cal Raleigh collected the other 13 first place votes. Judge was followed by Raleigh, Jose Ramirez (Cleveland), Bobby Witt Jr. (Toronto), and Tarik Skubal (Detroit) in the voting.

Schwarber was named the National League Outstanding Player of the Year by his colleagues in the MLB Player’s Choice Awards. Aaron Nola was also cited by the Player’s Association (MLBPA) for his philanthropic work.
