We all love jerseys. Sports teams – especially minor league teams – know that and roll out any number of alternative jerseys and hats and we buy them up quickly. Sometimes they’re a flop, but often they are a big hit with fans and the cash registers ring.
Each year, Major League Baseball salutes the 10 best selling jerseys from MiLBStores.com. This year, the Reading Fightins, no stranger to great alternate jersey designs, was in the top 10 sellers and saluted recently on National Jersey Day, which perhaps should be a National Holiday.
The area around Reading, PA where the Fightins play their home games has a large Pennsylvania Dutch community. All things German are popular in the area, so the Fightins played into that and even took on an entirely new identity as the Reading Prost for a game. What is Prost, you ask? It is German for “Cheers”! While it could be applied to the classic television show, it’s roots in this case are more centered around the celebratory sense of the word.

It turns out that the jerseys were a big hit, which surprised nobody. The white jersey with Navy Blue piping and trim has the word Prost written proudly across the front. To add a splash of the Reading Fightins primary color, the player number is also on the lower right of the jersey’s front in Reading Red. The sleeves are where it gets interesting. They have a light blue and white checkerboard design of an obviously happy pretzel. The openings in the pretzel form a reasonable facsimile of eyes and tiny little legs and feel below the pretzel give the little guy life. His legs are covered by lederhosen and his feet have Dutch clogs on them, because that’s what a well-dressed pretzel would wear. The pretzel is wearing a Bavarian hat with the Reading “R” on the front. This guy has some moves because while standing on one leg, he is preparing to swing a bat that is in his right “hand” and all the while is holding a full stein of beer in his left hand without spilling a drop.
You can purchase the jersey at MiLBStore.com or for a much wider collection of merchandise – and a better view of the pretzel – head to the Fightins official store to check out the full collection of Prost merch.
