The MLB Awards season is rolling right along and it looks like the Phillies might get shutout. The odds of Kyle Schwarber winning the MVP honor over Shohei Ohtani are not good. Cristopher Sanchez and Rob Thomson came close for Cy Young and Manager of the Year awards, but close doesn’t count in awards balloting.
Sanchez was the runner-up to Paul Skenes in balloting for the Cy Young award. Skenes was a unanimous choice for the award, getting all 30 votes for the top spot. In total points, Skenes beat out Sanchez 210 to 120. Finishing third was Yashinobu Yamamoto of the Dodgers and Logan Webb (Giants) was fourth in the voting. Tarik Skubal was a repeat winner in the American League, collecting 26 of the 30 votes for first place with Garrett Crochet of the Red Sox picking up the other four first place votes and finishing second in the voting. Hunter Brown (Astros), Max Fried (Yankees), and Bryan Woo (Mariners) rounded out the top five.
In the balloting for NL Manager of the Year, Rob Thomson finished third with Brewers manager Pat Murphy taking the top spot. Murphy collected 27 of the 30 first place votes. Former Phillies manager and current Cincinnati Reds manager Terry Francona received two top place votes and finished second with Thomson getting the final vote for the top spot and finishing third. Craig Counsell (Cubs) and Clayton McCullough (Marlins) round out the top five.
In the American League, the voting was closer with Stephen Vogt of the Guardians picking up 17 first place votes and a total of 113 votes. John Schneider of the American League champion Toronto Blue Jays was third with 91 points, including 10 first place votes. Dan Wilson (Mariners) and Alex Cora (Red Sox) were fourth and fifth, respectively. Both Murphy and Vogt were back-to-back winners of the award.
