The Surprise Saguaros walked off against the Mesa Solar Sox in the Arizona Fall League semifinals to advance to Friday’s AFL championship game. The Saguaros will face the winner of Thursday night’s other semifinal game between the Peoria Javelinas and the Scottsdale Scorpions.
Three Phillies prospects played in the game won by the Saguaros 4-3, but with little success. Dante Nori hit leadoff for Surprise and suffered an 0-for-5 night at the plate, striking out once and also hitting into a bases loaded double-play that ended the second inning. Dylan Campbell went 1-for-4 with a single in the eighth inning for Surprise. Campbell popped out with runners on first and second for the first out of the second inning, prior to Nori’s double-play groundball. Like Nori, Campbell came up with the bases loaded, but failed to come through, lining out to right to end the fifth inning.
On the mound, Jack Dallas came on to start the fifth inning in relief of starter Trenton Denholm (Cleveland), who threw four shutout innings allowing just one walk and no hits. Dallas gave up a hit in the fifth, but nothing else. In the sixth he was touched for two walks and two singles and was charged with three earned runs in the inning.
With the game tied 3-3 after six innings neither team was able to push a run across until the ninth. A.J. Causey (Kansas City) retired the Solar Sox in order in the top of the ninth. With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Joe Lampe (Cleveland) walked and stole second base. One out later, catcher Blake Mitchell (Kansas City) singled to left to score Lampe with the winning run.
Causey got the win and Holt Jones (Miami) took the loss for Mesa.
The championship game had been scheduled for Saturday but with bad weather forecast for the weekend, the game was moved up to Friday.
