In addition to finding a new bench coach for Rob Thomson, the Phillies may also be in the market for a new assistant hitting coach. The Baltimore Orioles hired Dustin Lind to be their next hitting coach, taking him away from his position as one of two assistant hitting coaches for the Phillies. The hiring was not a total surprise since Lind worked with new Orioles manager Craig Albernaz when the two were with the San Francisco Giants.
Lind worked under Phillies hitting coach Kevin Long and with Rafael Pena, who also serves as an assistant hitting coach with the Phillies. The Phillies could stick with one assistant under Long, but are likely to fill the spot.
If the Phillies stick within the organization they could look to their minor league system and bring up Lehigh Valley hitting coach Adam Lind (no relation to Dustin Lind), who has been a hitting coach in the organization for the past two seasons, serving with Lehigh Valley in 2025 and High-A Jersey Shore in 2024. Lind had a 12-year major league career as a player and had six seasons with at least 20 home runs and won the 2009 Silver Slugger Award for designated hitter after hitting 35 home runs and driving in 114 runs with a .932 OPS.
Reading hitting coach Tom Slater, who has major league coaching experience, may be considered as well. Slater served as a senior adviser and hitting coordinator for the Marlins for three seasons and was the Mets assistant hitting coach from 2018-2021.
Two former Phillies – Cody Asche and Tommy Joseph – served as assistant hitting coaches with the Orioles last season and are no longer with the organization. Asche recently was hired as the assistant hitting coach for the Detroit Tigers.
