I know the World Series is going on and the race for the top spot in the Arizona Fall League probably isn’t top of mind for baseball fans. That’s why you’ve got us! We’re following the fact that the Surprise Saguaros (11-5), with eight Phillies prospects on their roster, are in a back-and-forth battle for the top spot in the AFL with the Scottsdale Scorpions (11-4).
Let’s run down how those eight prospects are doing in the desert sun. Eiberson Castellano, 24, got the start in Sunday’s game and allowed just one run in four innings of work and struck out six hitters. The right-hander who was taken by Minnesota from the Phillies last December in the Rule 5 Draft only to be returned in March, has a 4.50 ERA in three starts with three walks and 15 strikeouts.
The other four pitchers from the Phillies are all right-handed relievers. Jack Dallas added two more shutout innings to his resume on Sunday and now has thrown seven innings this fall without allowing a run. He has allowed just three hits and three walks for a 0.830 WHIP and has 11 strikeouts. Check out his scouting report.
Tommy McCollum is 2-0 with a 4.15 ERA for the Saguaros in 4.1 innings this fall. Daniel Harper bounced back from a rough outing to throw a shutout inning on Sunday. In his four outings, three have been shutout innings and the other was a horrid 0.2 innings of work. In the end, it all comes out to a 12.00 ERA. And finally, Jaydenn Estanista was hit hard on Saturday when he gave up a home run and walked two batters in just 0.1 innings. His season ERA erupted to 11.25.
Among the hitters, Dante Nori has returned to action and had a three-hit game on Saturday to make him 3-for-10 in four games. Bryan Rincon has fallen to 2-for-11 (.183) this fall with one home run, three RBI, and two stolen bases.
The big slide continues for Dylan Campbell, who has literally been hit or miss lately. He now has two hits in his last 22 at-bats and has whiffed 12 times. Both of his hits though are home runs.
It would have been fun to see Aidan Miller playing in the AFL, but he was still bothered by a nagging injury that kept him out of the lineup the final three games of the season and the team wasn’t going to take any chances with him.
To get back to that pennant race, Surprise and Scottsdale will meet twice this week playing on Tuesday and Wednesday. Who says there aren’t any Phillies playing meaningful baseball in October?
