Trea Turner has missed the last three weeks with a strained hamstring, but is ready to return to the Phillies lineup for the final day of the season. The game will give Turner at least a bit of an opportunity to face live pitching and get some groundballs at shortstop – if Twins hitters cooperate – to prepare for the playoffs.
Turner comes into the final day as the leading hitter in the National League and is in fact, the only National League player who qualifies for the batting title who will is batting .300 or better this season. Nico Hoerner of the Chicago Cubs comes into the final day with a .295 average and would need to go 5-for-5 with Turner going 0-for-4 to edge out Turner for the batting title. In that scenario, Hoerner would finish the season at .30333 and Turner would finish at .30287. Turner also comes into the final day fifth in average in all of Major League Baseball. Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees leads the majors with a .331 average, besting Toronto’s Bo Bichette and the Athletics Jacob Wilson, who both come into Sunday’s games with a.311 mark.
To make room on the roster for Turner, the Phillies optioned reliever Max Lazar to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.
Edmundo Sosa has gotten most of the playing time at short in Turner’s absence, but Bryson Stott has seen time at the position as well with Weston Wilson playing some second base.
The Phillies have avoided a pair of injury scares over the past week with J.T. Realmuto taking a foul ball off of his throwing hand and Ranger Suarez surviving a line drive to his upper thigh in Saturday night’s loss.
