There was a lot going on in the Phillies Wednesday night demolishing of the Miami Marlins. The 11-1 Phillies win locked up the number-two spot in the NL for the Phillies, which gives the Phillies a first round bye and guarantees them home field advantage in every series except against Milwaukee, who holds the top seed. In addition to the team achievement a pair of players continued to put their stamp on a season that for them has been the best they have ever experienced.

Jesus Luzardo sets a career-high in strikeouts in a season with number 209.

Jesus Luzardo has had a few bumps show up during his season, but overall it has been a career-year for him. On Wednesday night, Luzardo pitched against his former team and reached career highs in both innings pitched and strikeouts in a season. When Luzardo got the first out of the third inning, he surpassed his previous high in innings which stood at 178.2 innings and was set in 2023. He went on to throw seven innings in the win and finishes the season with 183.2 innings pitched. Luzardo also struck out the side in each of the first two innings to put his season total at 216. His third strikeout in the first inning put him at 209, a new career-high for the left-hander. He finished his seven inning outing Wednesday with 10 strikeouts and has 216 on the season.

Kyle Schwarber hits home run number 55 on the season. He later hit number 56 and moved to just two behind the Phillies leader for home runs in a season, Ryan Howard. Howard hit 58 in 2006.

Then, there’s Kyle Schwarber. For the 55th time this season, Schwarbs went deep and became just the second Phillies player ever to hit 55 home runs in a season, and positioned himself just behind Ryan Howard, the first Phillies player ever to reach the 55 home run plateau. Later, Schwarber hit another home run, which leaves him just two behind Howard for the most home runs ever hit in a season by a Phillies player. The left-handed hitting Schwarber now has 23 home runs this season against left-handed pitchers, which is the most ever by a left-handed hitter against left-handed pitching.

With all of the achievements and career highs that were met or beaten Wednesday night, there were two that got caught in the shuffle. Edmundo Sosa, in his first game back from a stint on the IL, Sosa hit three home runs – one each in the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings – to give him 10 for the season. Schwarber’s two home runs and Sosa’s three home runs were part of setting a new team record for home runs in a game as the Phillies hit eight home runs in the win. In addition to Schwarber and Sosa, the other three came from Bryson Stott (13), Alec Bohm (11), and Otto Kemp (8).
