Ranger Suarez has had a couple of bumps in the road this season, but he has been money in his last two outings for the Phillies. On Sunday Suarez struck out a career-high 11 hitters and on Monday received his first ever nod as the National League Player of the Week.

Sunday’s dominant performance over the Washington Nationals gave Suarez a statistic that most pitchers only ever dream of; in fact, only one other Phillies pitcher – Cole Hamels – has achieved the feat. In consecutive starts Suarez has now had double-digit strikeouts without walking a batter, giving him 21 strikeouts and no walks in 13.2 innings of work. Going back further to a game on August 12th where Suarez was lit up by Cincinnati, the left-hander has now thrown 14 complete innings without allowing a walk. This season, Suarez has walked just 29 batters in 126 innings of work and has a 3.07 ERA. The strikeout rate has been especially impressive even by Suarez’ standards since coming into this past week the 30-year-old had made 111 MLB starts and had double-digit strikeouts only twice.

Back on July 5th, Suarez’ ERA reached a season low 1.99 after he allowed just one run in five innings of work against the Reds. Since then his stats have been up-and-down but overall, Suarez has been an effective part of the Phillies rotation.
