Lehigh Valley IronPigs
Lehigh Valley secured a convincing 8–2 win over the Durham Bulls, powered by a mid-game offensive surge and dominant pitching. After a quiet start, the IronPigs exploded in the fifth inning with four runs, followed by three more in the sixth. Garrett Stubbs was the catalyst in the fifth inning when he hit a three-run home run to give Lehigh Valley a 5-0 lead. The IronPigs used four walks and a wild pitch with an RBI single from Justin Crawford mixed in to put up three more runs in the sixth. In all, Durham pitchers combined to walk 14 batters in the game, including walking Rafael Lantigua five times to set a franchise record for Lehigh Valley. Starter Alan Rangel had to battle his control to get through 3.2 innings, but did so without allowing a run, thanks in part to Daniel Harper who entered in the fourth with bases loaded and two outs and got Cooper Hummel to fly out to center field for the final out. Jacob Waguespack made his return to the Phillies organization with a scoreless inning and Phil Bickford and Michael Mercado each threw a shutout inning to lock up the win. Crawford went 2-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 13 straight games.
Reading Fightin Phils
Reading was on the road in Altoona and dropped a 6-5 decision to the Curve. Reading took a 4-1 lead in the third on a two-run single from Jose Rodriguez and an RBI double by Felix Reyes. Erick Brito added an RBI double later in the game to cap the scoring for Reading. Paul McIntosh reached base three times with a walk, a single, and a double to lead the offense. Griff McGarry got the start for the Fightins and walked five batters in 3.1 innings, allowing two runs – one earned – in the outing. The bullpen allowed four more runs in 4.2 innings of relief with three different pitchers – Andrew Baker, Eiberson Castellano, and Tommy McCollum – giving up at least one run.
Jersey Shore BlueClaws
Jersey Shore hosted Hudson Valley Tuesday night and the visitors were not exactly kind. The Renegades picked up a 5-2 win over the BlueClaws, who committed three errors that contributed to one of the runs being unearned. Reese Dutton started and pitched well, going six innings on four hits and just one walk. Dutton was charged with three runs, just two of them being earned runs. Wesley Moore and Jose Pena Jr. pitched in relief and both allowed a run in their outing. Outfielder John Spikerman had two singles, stole a base, and scored a run for the ‘Claws, who collected just three hits in the game and drew just three walks.
Clearwater Threshers
Despite a strong offensive showing, Clearwater lost a heartbreaker 11–7 in 10 innings to Jupiter. The Threshers scored an unearned run in the first and then scored twice in both the third and fourth innings with Jonathan Hogart hitting a two-run home run in the third. In the fourth, Clearwater scored a run without a hit as they worked four walks and used a passed ball to score twice to make it 5-1. They did almost the same thing in the sixth when four straight batters walked to push across another run that made it 6-4 in favor of Clearwater. In the seventh, the Threshers loaded the bases with nobody out, but a strikeout and double play erased the threat. Jupiter sent 10 men to the plate in the 10th to score five runs against Orlando Gonzalez to cap the victory. Jupiter pitchers walked 16 batters and struck out 14 Clearwater hitters in the game. Juan Amarante allowed four runs in 4.1 innings and A.J. Wilson allowed two runs in his two innings of work. Luis Avila was the pitching star of the night with 2.2 clean innings of work for the Threshers.
