Don’t be fooled into thinking that Mick Abel is a bad pitcher; he’s not. He just is not quite ready to pitch in the majors. The Minnesota Twins, who gave the Phillies Jhoan Duran in exchange for Abel and minor leaguer Eduardo Tait, recalled Abel to pitch Saturday against the White Sox and it didn’t go well.
Abel, who turned 24 a week ago, lasted just three innings in Chicago and gave up seven hits and two walks as the White Sox hit him for six earned runs. The outing brings his major league numbers, including his six starts with the Phillies, to 2-3, 6.43 with 11 walks and 23 strikeouts in 28 big league innings.
Prior to being recalled, Abel was pitching at Triple-A St. Paul and made three starts, going 0-0, 1.76 with six walks and 23 strikeouts in just 15.1 innings of work. Meanwhile, Tait is with the High-A Cedar Rapids Kernels and is slashing 3-10-.253/.291/.427 in 19 games.
Duran has quickly become a fan favorite with the Phillies and has gone 0-1, 1.17 in nine appearances with the Phillies and has converted seven of eight save opportunities. In his time with both the Twins and Phillies, Duran is 6-5, 1.89 with 23 saves in 26 opportunities and has 62 strikeouts in 57 innings of work.
