A pitch to the ribs back on July 12th put Alec Bohm on the Injured List five days later. He started to take infield and live batting practice last week with Lehigh Valley before officially starting a rehab assignment with the IronPigs on Sunday. With Monday being an off day in the minor leagues, the next step for Bohm was to play on back-to-back days, which he did on Tuesday and Wednesday in Buffalo.
Bohm started his rehab assignment on an 0-for-10 slide, but broke it with a one-out solo home run in the sixth inning of Lehigh Valley’s 9-4 win over the Bisons Wednesday afternoon. Bohm finished the day 1-for-4 with a walk and two RBI as the DH for the IronPigs. The home run was a 404-foot shot to left-center field.
In Sunday’s game, Bohm charged a ball and made a bare-handed grab and threw off balance to get the runner at first. After the game, he said that he felt fine making the play and felt no ill-effects from the play.
Lehigh Valley has become somewhat of a medical unit for the Phillies of late. Aaron Nola likely finished his rehab stint Tuesday night when he went 5.2 innings and struck out 11 hitters and threw 84 pitches. It’s likely that Bohm will be activated to pitch either Sunday in Washington, D.C. or Monday in Philadelphia against the Seattle Mariners. Jose Alvarado, who is winding down his 80-game suspension for use of a banned substance pitched Wednesday afternoon and allowed a hit and a walk, but kept Buffalo off of the scoreboard. Alvarado has now thrown three total innings in three rehab appearances and has not allowed a run. He has allowed two hits and a walk while striking out four batters.
Reliever Daniel Robert started his rehab from a blister Tuesday with Lehigh Valley and allowed an earned run on two hits and a walk against Buffalo.
While Nola could be activated soon, there is no timetable set for Bohm or Robert. Alvarado is eligible to return to the active roster on August 19th, provided there are no rainouts that would postpone a game past that point. Alvarado is not eligible to pitch in the postseason.
