The Phillies have reached a minor league deal with right-handed reliever Lou Trivino, who is joining his third organization of the season. This season has seen the 33-year-old Trivino go from the Giants to being released and signing with the Dodgers prior to being released again and signing with the Phillies. Previously, Trivino pitched in the majors for Oakland and the New York Yankees.

Prior to this season, Trivino had not pitched in the majors since 2022 when he was a member of the Yankees. In 2023, Trivino underwent Tommy John surgery and then suffered a shoulder injury while rehabbing from the original injury. In 2024, Trivino returned to make five relief appearances for Double-A Somerset in the Yankees organization and six more with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre that season. Trivino became a free agent following the ’24 season leading him to his time with the Giants and Dodgers.

This season, Trivino was a combined 3-1 with a 4.42 ERA in 37 appearances, including two starts. He struggled with San Francisco with a 5.84 ERA in 11 relief appearances. With the Dodgers, things began to turn around and he posted a 2-1 record with a 3.76 ERA in 24 relief appearances and two starts. For his career, Trivino has a 24-26 record with a 3.92 ERA and 37 saves in 322 games.

Trivino’s best season came with Oakland in 2021 when he recorded 22 saves and posted an ERA of 3.18 in 71 relief appearances. The following season he was 1-6, 6.47 in 39 games with Oakland before being dealt to the Yankees where he went 1-2 with a 1.66 ERA in 25 relief outings.

The Phillies have added David Robertson and Jhoan Duran to their organization and it is unlikely that Trevino will have much, if any, role to play with the big league club this season. Robertson is currently pitching himself into game shape with Triple-A Lehigh Valley before joining the Phillies bullpen after not having pitched all season. Robertson is struggling with the IronPigs in his first four appearances and has allowed 10 hits in four innings and has a 2.75 WHIP. His ERA coming into this week stands at 13.50 with Lehigh Valley. Duran has made two appearances with the Phillies and has retired all six batters he has faced to record two saves in two outings.
