When the Phillies acquired pitcher Jhoan Duran, they were not done making deadline deals. In fact, that wasn’t even the final deal they made with the Minnesota Twins as they went back to Twins to strike a deal for outfielder Harrison Bader. The Phillies sent outfielder Hendry Mendez and pitcher Geremy Villoria to Minnesota for the right-handed hitting outfielder.
It is likely that Bader will now be the right-handed portion of a center field platoon with Brandon Marsh. Next door in left field, Max Kepler and Otto Kemp will be the lefty/righty platoon for manager Rob Thomson. The odd man out is probably going to be center fielder Johan Rojas, who is limited to playing only in center field and while he offers above average defense, has exhibited below average offensive skills.
The Phillies will be Bader’s sixth organization in nine MLB seasons. After starting with St. Louis, Bader has played for both New York teams, Cincinnati, and Minnesota before joining the Phillies. In those nine seasons, Bader has an 83-306-.243/.309/.397 line in 875 MLB games. This season with Minnesota, the 30-year-old was hitting 12-38-.258/.339/.439 in 96 games with the Twins. Bader can play all three outfield positions but has primarily been a center fielder in his major league career.
The Phillies were looking to upgrade the right side of their center field platoon. Rojas is batting 1-18-.224/.280/.289 in 71 games this season. Optioning Rojas to Triple-A Lehigh Valley will give him the opportunity to play every day to stay sharp in case the Phillies need to recall him later in the season.
Mendez, 21, has posted career highs in home runs (8) and RBI (46) while slashing .290/.374/.434 in 85 games with Double-A Reading. The Twins have assigned him to Double-A Wichita.
Villoria, who will turn 17 on August 14, has been playing in the Dominican Summer League for the Phillies and will be assigned to the Twins Dominican team. The right-handed starting pitcher is in his first season in professional ball and has made five starts for the Phillies Red team in the DSL. With an 0-1, 4.50 ERA in 14 innings of work, Villoria has struck out 19 batters and opponents are batting just .212 against him.
