Having division rivals who are battling for the top spot in the standings pull off a trade a few weeks before the trade deadline is rare. The Phillies and Mets pulled off a trade although it’s not likely to affect the standings for either team. Journeyman infielder Donovan Walton has played in parts of five out of the last six seasons in the majors with Seattle and San Francisco, playing in 70 games with 205 plate appearances. The Phillies acquired him for cash considerations.
Walton, 31, has the distinction of being selected in three different drafts. The Mets drafted him in the 30th round of the 2012 MLB Draft out of high school and the Brewers took him in the 23rd round of the 2015 Draft out of Oklahoma State. He made a big jump the following year when Seattle took him in the fifth round. He reached the majors with the Mariners in 2019 and played in seven games.
In his time in the majors, Walton has produced a line of 4-22-.174/.227/.305. Walton has played in 705 minor league games where he has produced at a 63-332-.279/.367/.418 clip. Last season Walton played in seven games with San Francisco and hit .136.
Defensively, Walton has played primarily at second and short, but has also logged time in left field (5 games) and third base (3 games).
The Phillies have sent Walton to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
