Nick Castellanos let his feelings about being pulled for defensive reasons late in the game against the Marlins on Monday night be known. Whatever it was he said, manager Rob Thomson felt it crossed a line causing him to bench Castellanos for Tuesday night’s game in Miami. The benching caused Castellanos to lose his 236 game consecutive starts streak, which was the second longest in the majors.
Thomson has pulled Castellanos at times late in games this season, but it was generally done in blowout situations. This time, it was done in a close game, which apparently what caused Castellanos to be upset. According to Charlotte Varnes of The Athletic: “Castellanos said he was unhappy with being pulled from yesterday’s game, then spoke his mind. Thomson told him he’d crossed a line.” Thomson also termed the infraction as being an “inappropriate comment.” Carnes also reported that Castellanos responded by saying: “It’s his decision. He’s the manager.”
The comment to Varnes about the decision points to him acknowledging the fact that he said something, but was not an apology for the incident. Neither side disclosed what was said by Castellanos that prompted the benching.
| THE MORE YOU KNOW?… The longest game started streak in the majors belongs to Matt Olson at 406 games. Thomson could have at least preserved Castellano’s streak for consecutive games played by inserting him late in the game, but he declined to do so. Olson also holds the current mark for games played at 691 and Pete Alonso has played in 327 straight games. |
Castellanos is hitting .278 with 7 home runs and 31 RBI this season.
