After some recent roster moves, pitchers Carlos Hernandez and Kyle Tyler were designated for assignment. The Phillies looked to get the two pitchers through waivers, but neither made it. Hernandez was claimed by the Detroit Tigers and Tyler was taken by the Baltimore Orioles.
The Phillies had hoped that they would be able to find a way to develop the hard throwing Hernandez into a useful piece for the bullpen, but he posted a 5.25 ERA in 25 relief appearances with the Phillies this season and walked 13 hitters in 25.2 innings of work while striking out 23 batters. With Kansas City, Hernandez had uneven results and saw his ERA bounce from 3.30 in 2024 from 7.39 two seasons earlier. In all or part of six seasons in the majors, Hernandez is 8-19 with a 4.98 ERA.
Hernandez, 28, has battled some shoulder problems throughout his career. Detroit recently designated pitcher John Brebbia for assignment so they had an open spot on their 40-man roster for Hernandez. The Tigers will have to keep Hernandez on their active roster or risk losing him on waivers since he is out of options. Hernandez may serve as some insurance for the Tigers bullpen, which may be losing pitcher Will Vest to the IL with soreness in the little finger of his pitching hand.
Tyler was originally drafted by the Angels in the 20th round of the 2018 Draft and has pitched in the majors with the Angels (2021), Padres (2022), and Marlins (2024). In 15 games, including 7 starts, Tyler has a 1-2 record with a 4.31 ERA. This season with Lehigh Valley, Tyler made 12 starts and was 5-3 with a 4.31 ERA. The Orioles pitching staff has been plagued by poor performances and injuries to both starters and relievers, which makes the fact that Tyler has worked as both a starter and reliever in his career especially attractive.
The Orioles had an open spot on their 40-man roster for Tyler, but he was assigned to Triple-A Norfolk rather than being added to the active roster.
