The Phillies named their Minor League Pitcher and Hitter of the month for April with the honors going to Mick Abel (Lehigh Valley) for the pitching honors and Otto Kemp (Lehigh Valley) and Aroon Escobar (Clearwater) sharing the hitting honors for the month.
Abel made seven starts for the IronPigs and finished the month with a 3-2 record and a 2.89 ERA striking out 36 in 34.1 innings of work. The numbers were a turnaround from how Abel finished last season when he went 3-12, 6.46 in 24 starts at Lehigh Valley.
The 23-year-old was the 15th overall pick by the Phillies in the 2020 Draft out of Jesuit High School in Portland, Oregon.
Kemp and Escobar shared the first monthly honor of the season. Kemp also was chosen as the International League (IL) Player of the Week for April 28 through May 4 and the IL Player of the Month for April. Kemp, 25, hit 9-24-.315 in April with Lehigh Valley where he played first base, second base, third base, and left field for the IronPigs. Kemp went undrafted and was signed as a non-drafted free agent out of Point Loma Nazarene College in California.
Escobar is in his fourth minor league season and just his second season playing in the United States. After two seasons in the Dominican Summer League, Escobar spent last season in the Florida Coast League Phillies where he slashed 3-17-.338/.495/.481 in 24 games. In April, Escobar hit 5 home runs and drove in 18 runs with a .360 batting average for Clearwater. The 20-year-old has played exclusively at second base for Clearwater, but has experience at third base and initially played some shortstop but has not played there since 2022.
