The plan was for Luke Williams to have a career as a super-sub coming off the Phillies bench but that never happened. After a fairly long and twisting road that took him to the west coast back east, back west, and now back east, Williams has had his contract purchased by the Atlanta Braves. Atlanta optioned outfielder Forrest Wall, who had one plate appearance in two games played this season, to Gwinnett to clear a major league roster spot for Williams. Atlanta did not need to clear a 40-man roster spot since they had an open spot.

After being drafted by the Phillies in the third round of the 2015 Draft, Williams debuted with the Phillies on June 8, 2021 and played in 58 games that season with a line of 1-6-.245/.315/.316 but found himself traded to San Francisco late in spring training the following season when the Phillies acquired infielder Will Toffey, who never did reach the majors with the Phillies or any other team. After playing in eight MLB games with the Giants, Williams was placed on waivers and claimed by the Miami Marlins and played in 71 games in 2022. Next up was a stop with the Dodgers, who claimed him off waivers from Miami. Williams added four games with the Dodgers to his resume in 2023 before again going on waivers and being claimed by Atlanta and playing in seven games with them last season.

Following the season, Williams became a minor league free agent and re-signed with the Braves, opening the season with the Gwinnett Stripers of the International League. In 15 games with Gwinnett Williams had a line of 3-13-.268/.323/.482 before having his contract purchased by the Braves.

In all, Williams has played in 148 major league games and has a line of 2-12-.225/.281/.295 with 17 stolen bases.
