Darick Hall had hoped he would be back in the starting lineup for Friday’s home opener against the Reds, but instead, he was officially placed on the IL and will have surgery on his thumb Wednesday. Initially diagnosed as a sprained thumb, it was determined that Hall also tore a ligament in his thumb that will require surgery to repair. To take Hall’s spot on the roster, the Phillies recalled Kody Clemens from Triple-A Lehigh Valley and placed him in the lineup at first base for Friday’s opener.

Hall injured the thumb attempting to stretch a single into a double in Wednesday’s game at Yankee Stadium. He left the game after being checked by the trainer and it was hoped he would be able to avoid a stint on the IL, but after the game news that the injury was worse than initially feared started to trickle out. Hall figures to miss six to eight weeks because of the injury.

The Phillies lost first baseman Rhys Hoskins to a torn ACL and Hall was next in line to take over the job at first against right-handers. Against lefties, the Phillies had moved Alec Bohm to first and used Edmundo Sosa at third base. The plan now is to use Clemens at first base against righties.

Clemens, 26, is a left-handed hitter and came over to the Phillies in the same trade that brought Gregory Soto to the Phillies. In his rookie season last year, Clemens played in 56 games with the Tigers getting 127 plate appearances and batting .145 with five home runs and 17 RBI. In addition to playing first base, Clemens played at third, second and left field for Detroit last season.
