With a number of players fighting for the last couple of roster spots, the Phillies made cuts to get their roster down to 26 for Opening Day. Kody Clemens, Scott Kingery, and pitcher Michael Plassmeyer were all cut from the roster with Jake Cave and Dalton Guthrie getting spots on the final 26. It is possible that the Phillies could add a player off waivers or through a trade and need to make another cut before Thursday’s opener in Texas.

Clemens, Plassmeyer and righties Erich Uelmen and Luis Ortiz were all optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Kingery and infielders Jim Haley and Weston Wilson along with catchers John Hicks and Aramis Garcia were all reassigned to minor league camp and will likely open the season with Lehigh Valley.

Cave had three home runs with 14 RBI and a .440 average this spring with the Phillies. The left-handed hitting Cave, 30, has played in all or parts of five seasons with Minnesota where he played in 335 games with a 33-118-.235/.297/.411 line. Guthrie made his MLB debut last September and is still considered a rookie after playing in 14 games with the Phillies and hitting .333 (7-for-21) with one home run and five RBI. Guthrie can play center, right, second and third, while Cave has played all three outfield spots in the majors.

The Phillies roster will likely have catchers J.T. Realmuto and Garrett Stubbs with infielders Alec Bohm, Darick Hall, Josh Harrison, Edmundo Sosa, Bryson Stott, and Trea Turner. The outfielders who appear to have made the roster are: Nick Castellanos, Cave, Guthrie, Brandon Marsh, and Kyle Schwarber.

The five starters for the Phillies will be Aaron Nola, Zack Wheeler, Taijuan Walker, Bailey Falter, and Matt Strahm. The bullpen has left-handers Jose Alvarado, Gregory Soto, and Andrew Vasquez. Right-handed relievers include Andrew Bellatti, Connor Brogdon, Seranthony Dominguez, Craig Kimbrel, and Yunior Marte.
