Joe Girardi should have gotten this win back in April, but instead he had to wait until nearly the end of August to see his career win total as a manager flip over to 1,000. Girardi is in his 12th season as a major league manager and came to the Phillies with 988 wins to his credit. The 3-2 win over the Nationals came behind Aaron Nola, who wasn’t even aware that it was an historic win for his manager.

“I didn’t even know it was his 1,000th win; that’s a lot of wins,” said Nola after his seven inning outing that moved his record to 3-2 on the season. “Everybody knows Joe, his resume, he’s been in the game for a long time; it’s a milestone.”

The players presented Girardi with a bottle of champagne with “1,000 Wins” inscribed across the label. Bryce Harper gave a speech that his manager admitted was emotional for him to hear.

“I’m very thankful,” said Girardi. “Bryce made a great speech and it brought a tear to my eye because I just feel that I’ve really been blessed.”

“Everybody knows the type of person Joe is. He’s been in the game for a long time with the Marlins, Yankees and us. He’s a great manager, he’s a great person and a great family man as well. To get 1,000 wins is an incredible milestone and an incredible feat,” said Harper, who wound up driving in the winning run for Philadelphia.

The Phillies trailed 2-1 until they got to starter Patrick Corbin in the seventh with a leadoff triple from Didi Gregorious. Corbin exited in favor of Will Harris and Alec Bohm greeted him with an RBI single to right to tie the game. Roman Quinn then dropped down a bunt that turned into a fielder’s choice and erased Bohm at second, leaving Quinn at first. Andrew McCutchen then lifted a flyball to deep right-center field that was misplayed to put runners on first and second for Harper who followed with an RBI single to left to give the Phillies the lead.

Tommy Hunter held the Nationals at bay in the eighth and Brandon Workman allowed two hits, but also put up two strikeouts in the ninth to record his sixth save of the season.

Girardi picked up the first 78 managerial wins of his career with the Marlins and another 910 while the skipper of the Yankees. In his career, Girardi has 808 losses, 14 of which have come as the Phillies manager this season.
