The Phillies continued to do a little shopping Saturday and looked toward the Los Angeles Dodgers for a young outfielder. They found 28-year old Kyle Garlick, who they acquired for lefty reliever Tyler Gilbert. To make room for Garlick on the 40-man roster, they designated outfielder Nick Martini for assignment.

Garlick, who made his MLB debut in 2019 was a casualty of the Dodgers deal that brought Mookie Betts and David Price to L.A. To clear a roster spot, he was designated for assignment, which brought the Phillies calling.

In 2019, Garlick appeared in 30 games with the Dodgers, but made it to the plate just 53 times, being used primarily as a pinch-hitter. Overall, Garlick hit 3-6-.250/.321/.521 with the Dodgers last season. In 18 plate appearances (PA), Garlick walked three times and struck out six with a slash line of .200/.333/.333 with two of his three hits being doubles. He didn’t have any home runs or RBI as a pinch-hitter, but did score five runs. A right-handed hitter, Garlick hit lefties at a good pace with a line of 3-5-.267/.333/.667 in 33 PA.

The Dodgers drafted Garlick in the 28th round of the 2015 Draft out of Cal Poly. In five minor league seasons, Garlick hit 91 home runs and drove in 283 with a line of .288/.345/.536. He hit 40 of his 91 minor league home runs over two seasons at the Triple-A level, driving in 105 runs, batting .281/.332/.568 in 178 Triple-A games.

Gilbert, 26, pitched primarily at Triple-A Lehigh Valley over the past two seasons and went 5-5 with a 3.17 ERA in 61 relief appearances covering 81 2/3 innings of work with 20 walks and 74 strikeouts. Gilbert was also drafted in 2015, going to the Phillies in the fifth round out of USC.

The Phillies claimed Martini off waivers from the Reds earlier in the offseason, but he is one of a bunch of left-handed hitting outfielders in camp with the team. Should he clear waivers, the Phillies may elect to keep him in the minors as insurance.
