Chris Young, who was removed as the Phillies pitching coach following the season, has found new employment. The Chicago Cubs hired Young to be their bullpen coach under new manager David Ross. The Phillies had offered Young a position with the club other than being the team’s pitching coach, but he elected to look elsewhere. The Phillies pitching coach job under Joe Girardi went to former Reds manager and Mariners pitching coach Bryan Price.

Young will work under Cubs pitching coach Tommy Hottovy, who pitched in the majors with Boston in 2011 and with Kansas City in 2012. Hottovy is a holdover from Joe Maddon‘s staff. Young will have another former Phillies coach with him on the staff. Brad Mills is the Cubs assistant director of advanced scouting and run prevention. Young replaces Lester Strode, who was not brought back on Ross’ staff.

The Phillies elevated Young from being their assistant pitching coach in 2018 to being their pitching coach in 2019 at the expense of Rick Kranitz. The Phillies feared other teams hiring Young and making him their pitching coach and made a knee-jerk reaction in dismissing Krantiz. As for Kranitz, he wound up with Atlanta, the NL East division winner.

Former Phillies hitting coach John Mallee was hired by Joe Maddon to be a part of his new staff with the L.A. Angels. Former manager Gabe Kapler is one of three finalists – Astros bench coach Joe Espada and Rays bench Matt Quatraro are the other two – for the Giants managerial job, which remains open after Bruce Bochy‘s retirement.
