Pitchers Fernando Salas and Dan Straily and catcher Rob Brantly have all elected to become free agents. The three players were all outrighted off of the Phillies 40-man roster and have either three seasons of MLB experience or were previously outrighted. All three were temporarily added to the Phillies 40-man roster this season and played in the majors, but were then outrighted to clear not only a 25-man roster spot, but a 40-man roster spot. The players had the opportunity to either become a free agent when they were outrighted or choose to do so at the end of the season.

Salas, 34, was signed to a minor league deal during the season and pitched in three games with the Phillies, posting a 6.75 ERA. Salas was brought to the majors and then designated for assignment and outrighted twice during the season, spending a total of seven days on the 40-man roster. With Triple-A Lehigh Valley, Salas made 18 relief appearances with a 4.24 ERA. He has just over six seasons of MLB service time under his belt.

Straily was outrighted to Triple-A by the Orioles and then traded to the Phillies for cash considerations. During the off-season, the 30-year old Straily signed a one-year, $575-thousand deal with Baltimore and made eight starts and six relief appearances with Baltimore, pitching to a 9.82 ERA in the majors. He made six starts for Triple-A Norfolk with a 2.38 ERA and six more starts at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, posting a 5.18 ERA.

Rob Brantly came to the majors when J.T. Realmuto was placed on paternity leave and got one plate appearance with the Phillies, striking out. Brantly, 30, had played in the majors with the Marlins and White Sox prior to this season and has just over one-year of MLB service time and 126 games over parts of five different seasons. He is a career .229 hitter at the major league level. With Triple-A Lehigh Valley, Brantly hit .314 in 82 games this past season and is a career .264 hitter at the Triple-A level.
